Hiking/ horseback riding in the Guaymi reservation
Hikes or horseback rides to the Guaymi Indian reservation in the hills behind Pavones provide you with a physical challenge as weIl as the opportunity to get to know an indigenous Costa Rican/Panamenian culture. Hike through pleasantly cool ('air conditioned') virgin rain forest and enjoy panoramic views from cleared hilltops. Apart from ocean, gulf and Osa Peninsula you can see EI Baru volcano to the East, at 11,400 feet Panamas highest mountain. Rinse off your sweat in clear mountain streams. Day trips or overnight stays with a Guaymi family can be arranged. Simple, national park type lodging, sheets, mosquito nets and food (Guaymi cuisine) are provided. Hikes are recommended mainly during the dry season (December through April). Trails get very muddy when it rains.
